    What is conjunction and types of conjunctions with examples: Conjunction play vital role in English grammar, Most of the writers forget the importance of conjunctions but still they have their own place in English grammar Here we are giving you complete knowledge about conjunction and types of conjunctions with examples.

    What is Conjunction and types of conjunctions with examples

    What is Conjunction?

    A conjunction is a word which joins two words, or sentences. This is also called sentence linker or connective. Their main task is to link two or more words, clauses or sentences. Let’s take few examples to simplify conjunctions.

    I was tensed yet I did not show it.

    Smith likes cheese and pasties.

    In the above examples the highlighted words and, yet, and are conjunctions that are joining two sentences, nouns and clauses.

    We have few Common conjunctions that are: and, but, if, yet, because, for, or, so etc.

    Conjunctions can be categories basically in three types. All the three types of conjunctions are given below

    Coordinating conjunctions

    Subordinating conjunctions 

    Correlative conjunctions

    Let’s discuss all these types of conjunctions in details

    Types of Conjunctions

    1. Coordinating conjunctions

    It is the first type of conjunction, In this we combine two sentences which are independent of each other. The simple, short conjunction is called coordinating conjunction. For example

    And or for yet but nor so

    We can classify coordinating conjunction in following types

    Four types of Coordinating conjunctions

     (i) Cumulative conjunctions:-With the help of these conjunctions we connect one statement another statement.

    Few of cumulative conjunctions are listed in the table given below

    And As well as now

     For example

           She likes to eat milk and fruit.

           Steve as well as Larry is absent.

           Jenny is writer as well as an entrepreneur.

    In the above examples the highlighted words and, as well as are cumulative conjunctions which are joining two sentences, nouns and clauses.

    (ii) Alternative conjunctions:-  In this type of conjunctions, we combine two sentences in which it seems that we are choosing one options from other options.

    Few of alternative conjunctions are listed in the table given below

    or Otherwise Else

    For example

          He must weep or he will die.

          We can go today or tomorrow.

          Mark must work hard, otherwise he is sure to fail in each field.

    In the above examples the highlighted words or otherwise are cumulative conjunctions which are joining two sentences, nouns and clauses.

    (iii) Adversative conjunctions:- :-  In this type of conjunctions, we combine two sentences which are opposite of each other.

    Few of adversative conjunctions are listed in the table given below

    But yet Still only

     For example

            They played very well but they lost the match.

           We worked hard, but still we failed.

           Mark made good promises only he never kept them.

    In the above examples the highlighted words but, only are adversative conjunctions that are joining two sentences, nouns and clauses.

    (iv) Illative conjunctions:- With this type of conjunctions, we combine two sentences in which result of one sentences is caused by another sentence

    Few of illative conjunctions are listed in the table given below

    For Therefore so

     For example

          Rocky was rude, therefore, I punished him.

          Sammy did not walk fast, so she missed the bus.

          Katty will surely pass for her hard work.

    2. Subordinating conjunctions

    (Subordinating conjunction joins two sentences which are totally dependent on each other. If we divide the whole sentences in two parts then one will be principal clause and other will be subordinate clause.      

    Few of subordinate conjunctions are listed in the table given below

    Before Till If Because Although That

     Before

              Example:-the patient had died before the doctor came.

     Till

              Example:-you stay here till I return.

     If

              Example:-I shall be late if the train does not come.

    Because

              Example:-Reena could not go to school because she was ill.

    Although

            Example:-Although Ravi was ill, he went to college.

     That

              Example:-This is the bike that I want to buy.

    All the above examples are of subordinate conjunctions

    3. Correlative conjunctions

    Correlative conjunction is a paired conjunction and it works only with pairs.

    Few of Correlative conjunctions are listed in the table given below

    Either …or Neither …nor Weather…or Though…yet

     Either …or

                 Example:-She is either afraid or frightened.

    Neither …nor

                 Example: – It is neither useful nor essential.

    Weather…or

                 Example: – I do not care whether you like me or note.

    Though…yet

                  Example: – Though Mr. Ram is very rich yet he is quite unhappy.

    All the above examples are of Correlative conjunctions.
