    What are phrasal verbs and their types in English grammar? Phrasal verbs are very important part of English grammar. They make the use of language more strong. By knowing the meaning of verbs cannot make you able to understand the meaning of phrasal verbs. You need to use phrasal verbs as much as possible when you come across them. With the help of phrasal verbs, sentence becomes more catchy in spoken in English.

    However, phrasal verbs are mostly used in informal language and spoken English. One should not use phrasal verbs in formal writing of their academic study. Still you need to learn phrasal verbs for spoken English.     What are phrasal verbs and their types in English grammar?

    Phrasal verbs: Phrasal verbs are the combination a regular verb or preposition or adverbs. The meaning of this combination is totally different from the original verb.

    For example

    To add == to sum (e.g. He need to add both these values.)

    Add up == to make sense (e.g. Whatever Sam told me doesn’t add up, I think he has stolen my book.)

    Blow up (To explode)

    Come across == to find something by chance

    Get away == to go away

    Hold on == to keep something in your hand

    Look after == to take care of someone

    Pass out == to become faint or unconscious

    Put down == to place something or write something

    Watch out == to be aware of danger

    Types of phrasal verbs

    Transitive phrasal verbs: Those phrasal verbs that always have object are called transitive phrasal verbs.

    For example

    This table is made up of two wooden and iron.

    Intransitive phrasal verbs: Those phrasal verbs that don’t have object are called intransitive phrasal verbs.

    For example

    Due to an accident, the lady passed out.

    Types of phrasal verbs according to their structure

    Separable phrasal verbs: Those transitive phrasal verbs in which there is an object between verb and preposition are called separable phrasal verbs.

    For example

    You can put the table down in the kitchen.

    Inseparable phrasal verbs: Those transitive phrasal verbs in which the object is placed after preposition are called separable phrasal verbs.

    For example

    You need to hold on your job till you get new job.
