Position of Adverbs in English Sentences with Exercises: There are lots of studies related to Position of Adverbs in Sentences. But still there is no exact theory about Position of Adverbs. It is the ability of adverbs that they can move to different position in a sentence. Adverbs always come near to the word they modify.

If we change the Position of Adverbs then the whole meaning of sentence gets changed. Let us elaborate it with an example.

    • Only I saw her tablet. (Only I no one else)
    • I only saw her tablet. (I only saw not touched)
    • I saw only her tablet. (Only her tablet not anyone else tablet)
    • I saw her only tablet. (Only her single tablet)
    • I saw her tablet only. (Only tablet nothing else)

In the above example, it is clear that the meaning of sentence can be changed if we change the position of adverbs. We must always remember where adverbs should be placed in a sentence.

Position of Adverbs in English Sentences with Exercises

There are different positions of adverbs where we can put them in a sentence. These three positions are given below as

At the beginning (Before the subject)

In the middle (Between the subject and the verb)

At the End (at the end of clause)

To understand adverbs position, read the following explanation carefully.

    At the beginning

    (Before the subject)

    1. Interrogative Adverbs are always used at the beginning of sentences.

    For example:

    • Where are you working these days?
    • How is everything going on with you?
    • When will you let me know about your plan?
    1. To modify the whole sentence, we use adverbs at the beginning.

    For example:

    • Surely, we will win the match.
    • Probably, it will rain today.
    1. Sometimes we use adverbs at the beginning for Emphasis.

    For example:

    • Off he goes.
    • There goes the bell

     In the middle

(Between the subject and the verb)

    1. For few adverbs of time (always, never, ever, often etc.) are place before verbs they modify.

    For examples:

    • He never praised me for my winnings.
    • She often thinks of me.
    1. When auxiliary verb is given in the sentence then adverbs are place in between auxiliary verb and full verb.

    For example:

    • She does not know me.
    • Mark will never forgive us.
    1. When we use verb ‘to be’ as full verb then adverbs are placed after verb.

    For example:

    • She is always upset.
    • She was not right.

    At the End

    (At the end of clause)

    1. When any adverb modifies an intransitive verb then it is placed after the verb.

    For example:

    • He went early.
    • She came there.
    • We completed the task peacefully.
    • He behaved foolishly.
    1. When we have to use any adverbs with transitive verb then it is used after object.

    For example:

    • She must read her book quietly.
    • I can solve this puzzle easily.
